Scope
When I started CivicMaple, I had a clear picture of what it should be: a place where a quick, reliable answer is never more than a short read away. That means I also have a clear picture of what it should not be. This page explains the boundaries I work within, so you know when to look elsewhere.
What this site does not cover
There are three subjects I deliberately leave out: politics, celebrity gossip, and how-to tutorials. The first two are easy to explain. Politics is a field where context, opinion, and live developments matter more than a static page can offer. Even a neutral summary can become misleading within hours, and I would rather point you to a news outlet that updates continuously. Celebrity gossip is a similar case: it is often speculative, frequently changes, and rarely benefits from a reference page. You will find no coverage of figures like Adam Rich or Lars Ulrich here, not because they are uninteresting, but because their stories belong to the news cycle, not to a reference library.
How-to tutorials are a different matter. They are useful, but they are also a genre with its own conventions, and they demand step-by-step instructions, troubleshooting, and updates. That is not what I do. My background is in research editing and fact-checking, not in instructional design. I would rather write one accurate page about a topic than a dozen walkthroughs that go stale.
What I do cover, and why the line matters
Within those limits, CivicMaple covers a wide range of topics across seven sections: People, Entertainment, History, Places, Nature, Politics, and Sports. You might notice that politics appears on that list even though I said I do not cover it. The distinction is between current political events and the history or mechanics of political systems. A page about a historical figure like Calamity Jane is history, not gossip. A page about a film like The Green Mile is entertainment, not a review. The line is not always obvious, but I apply it consistently.
This boundary is also a promise. When you land on a CivicMaple page, you can trust that it is a reference, not a commentary. I do not chase trends, and I do not publish anything that requires daily updates. If a topic does not fit that model, I leave it alone. That is why the site has 938 entries and no ads, no tracking, and no opinion pieces.
When to look elsewhere
If you need breaking news, political analysis, or a step-by-step guide, you will find better resources elsewhere. I update this site based on reader questions, and I edit it like a local newspaper, one page at a time. If you are unsure whether a topic belongs here, write to me at emily@civicmaple.com. I will give you a straight answer, and if I cannot help, I will tell you where to go.
